Vetnil® Veterinarian explains how the balance of the intestinal microbiota can impact the immunity, digestion and quality of life of pets

Veterinary medicine has increasingly recognized that pet health begins in the gut. The balance of the gut microbiota—composed primarily of bacteria, as well as viruses, fungi, and protozoa—is increasingly acknowledged as a cornerstone of canine and feline well-being, influencing everything from digestion and metabolism to immune response and lifelong vitality. Studies have also shown that a healthy microbiota influences other systems and organs, such as the skin, and can even impact pets’ behavior.

According to Vetnil® veterinarian Kauê Ribeiro, the gastrointestinal tract houses a complex ecosystem of microorganisms that perform essential bodily functions. When this environment is balanced, animals tend to cope better with daily challenges, resulting in greater comfort and quality of life.

“Understanding the role of gut microbiota is crucial for pet health. The gut can be considered one of the body’s primary lines of defense, serving as its largest immunological organ. When balanced, it promotes efficient nutrient absorption, the production of important metabolites, and a more effective bodily response to everyday challenges. Therefore, gut health influences various bodily functions and directly impacts the animals’ quality of life,” Kauê explains.

The veterinarian notes that several routine factors can disrupt this balance. “Sudden dietary changes, stress, medication use, travel, aging, and periods of heightened vulnerability can lead to dysbiosis—an imbalance of the microbiota. This alteration can affect various bodily functions,” he adds.

Synbiotics as allies in preventive care

Given this context, there is growing interest in nutritional solutions that help maintain gut balance. Among these, synbiotics—a combination of probiotics and prebiotics—are gaining traction in veterinary practice. “Probiotics are microorganisms that benefit a pet’s body, while prebiotics act as substrates selectively used by these bacteria, promoting their growth. When we combine the two, we create an environment more favorable for maintaining metabolic functions and preventing colonization by pathogenic microorganisms,” explains Kauê.

According to the veterinarian, animals of all ages can benefit from this support, especially during critical stages (puppies and seniors), routine changes, travel, or recovery from illness. “Gut care should be viewed as part of the preventive approach in virtually all clinical scenarios,” he adds.
