Acepromazine is a phenothiazine derivative of the third series (adrenolytic) often used in anesthetic routine, both for its tranquilizing effect as well as its potentiation of barbituric, non-barbituric and dissociative anesthetic agents. The phenothiazines have low analgesic activity. The main activity of Acepromazine is the blocking of postsynaptic mesolimbic dopaminergic receptors in the brain. The deficiency of dopamine, a catecholamine neurotransmitter, causes signs of dysmetria, deambulation, apathy, environment indifference, sleepiness and lateral decubitus. As an antiemetic, the phenothiazines inhibit the medullar trigger zone of the vomit.

INDICATION

For equines as an aid in the control of the animals during clinical and diagnostic tests, treatments, dental procedures, trimming, shoeing, abdominal and rectal palpations, loading and transportation. Very efficient when used together with local anesthesia in minor surgical procedures like: castrations, neurectomies, removal of skin tumors, suture of skin lacerations and eye surgeries. It is also indicated as a pre-anesthetic agent, both for its tranquilizing effect as well as its potentiation of barbituric, non-barbituric and dissociative anesthetic agents.

MODE OF USE

For use in equines, intravenously or intramuscularly, in the dose of 0,1 mg/Kg, that is, 0,01 mL/Kg. After intravenous administration, sedative effects begin in 10 to 15 minutes, providing 60 to 120 minutes of sedation. When administered intramuscularly, Acepromazine may cause the equine to be cooperative, oriented and calm, allowing the performance of superficial procedures, such as: clinical checkup of pregnant animal, transport and stress reduction during separation of the foal from the mother. Dosages may be changed according to the advice of the Veterinarian.
