Ampicillin is a semi-synthetic compound derived from 6-aminopenicillanic acid, which is characterized by its extensive spectrum of antimicrobial activity. The ß-lactam antibiotics exert their bactericidal effect preventing the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall and breaking down its integrity. Generally results in cell death by lysis, which can be measured by bacterial autolysins. Majority of penicillins in aqueous solution are rapidly absorbed from the parenteral application sites. Ampicillin is distributed to the liver, bile, muscle, kidney and fat after absorption by the gastrointestinal system or from the injection site. The excretion is renal and, after 6 to 8 hours, about 30% of the administered dose can be detected in urine.
