INDICATION

Vetnidazol® Comprimidos is a metronidazole-based medication, indicated for local or systemic infections caused mainly by anaerobic bacteria.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Metronidazole is a bactericide and antiprotozoal with a concentration-dependent effect. It is part of the second generation of heterocyclic nitroimidazoles, whose action involves the formation of free radicals that damage the metabolism of protozoans and anaerobic bacteria.

After entering the cytoplasm of microorganisms, the metronidazole molecule undergoes reduction of its nitro group, creating cytotoxic metabolites that interact with the DNA of the bacteria or protozoan, which inhibits the synthesis of nucleic acids and, consequently, results in death of the pathogen.
